How to Care for Your Jewelry — A 5-Minute Routine
How to Care for Your Jewelry: A 5-Minute Routine That Keeps Everything Looking New
Good jewelry is built to last. But even the best materials benefit from a little attention. The good news? You don't need ultrasonic cleaners, expensive solutions, or hours of maintenance. A few simple habits — most taking less than a minute — will keep your LOTTEDS pieces looking exactly as they did on day one.
The Golden Rule: Order Matters
This is the single most impactful habit you can build: put your jewelry on last.
Perfume, lotion, hairspray, makeup — these products contain chemicals that can build up on metal surfaces over time. Even though our PVD gold finish is highly resistant, minimizing chemical exposure is the easiest way to extend its brilliance.
The routine: Get ready. Spray. Moisturize. Then — and only then — put on your jewelry. When you undress at night, take your jewelry off first, before you wash your face or apply night cream.
After Water: The 10-Second Habit
Our 316L stainless steel is water-resistant. You can wash your hands, get caught in the rain, or sweat through a workout without worry. But water spots can dull the shine over time — especially if you're in an area with hard water.
The routine: After any water exposure, give your piece a quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Ten seconds. That's it. Keep a microfiber cloth in your bathroom or gym bag, and it becomes automatic.
Pro tip: Every LOTTEDS box includes a professional polishing cloth. Use it. It's designed specifically for fine jewelry and won't leave micro-scratches like paper towels or tissues can.
The 5-Minute Monthly Refresh
Once a month — or whenever you notice your pieces losing a bit of their sparkle — do this quick routine:
Step 1: Warm Water + Mild Soap (2 minutes)
Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Soak your jewelry for 1–2 minutes. This loosens any buildup of lotion, sweat, or daily residue.
Step 2: Gentle Brush (1 minute)
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush — the kind marketed for babies works perfectly — to gently clean around stone settings and chain links. Don't scrub hard. Let the bristles do the work.
Step 3: Rinse & Dry (1 minute)
Rinse thoroughly with cool, clean water. Dry immediately with your LOTTEDS polishing cloth. Don't let water air-dry on the surface — that's how spots form.
Step 4: Buff (1 minute)
Using the polishing cloth, buff the surface in gentle circular motions. You'll see the brilliance return immediately.
For Sterling Silver Pieces: The Baking Soda Trick
Sterling silver naturally oxidizes over time — and that's actually proof of its purity. If your silver LOTTEDS piece has developed a darker patina, here's a quick fix:
Mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water to form a paste. Apply gently with your fingers or a soft cloth. Rinse with cool water. Buff dry. The patina lifts, and the original shine returns in seconds.
Never use: Paper towels (they leave micro-scratches), toothpaste (too abrasive), bleach or harsh chemicals (they can damage even PVD finishes), or ultrasonic cleaners with plated jewelry (the vibrations can loosen stones).
Storage: The 5-Second Rule
When you're not wearing your jewelry, store it in the original LOTTEDS box with the anti-tarnish strip included. This does two things: prevents scratches from pieces rubbing against each other, and slows any natural oxidation on silver pieces.
If you travel, use a small jewelry pouch with separate compartments. Never throw multiple pieces loose into a makeup bag — chains tangle, stones scratch metal, and the friction wears down finishes faster than anything.
Pool, Beach, and Gym: The Exceptions
While 316L steel is highly resistant, chlorine and saltwater are harsh on any metal — including solid gold. We recommend removing jewelry before swimming. For the gym, our pieces handle sweat perfectly well, but if you're using chalk, grip powders, or sanitizing sprays on equipment, it's best to take rings off first.
Jewelry Care Is Self-Care
Caring for your jewelry isn't a chore. It's a small ritual — a few minutes of attention for pieces that make you feel confident every day. And with LOTTEDS materials, that's all it takes. No special equipment. No expensive solutions. Just a little consistency.
